message

Definition of message in The Network Encyclopedia.

What is message (in computer networking)?

A communication sent by one user to another user by means of an e-mail system such as the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) mail system that is used over the Internet. In networking in general, a message is any grouping of information at the application layer (layer 7) of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model that is exchanged between applications for various purposes. These layer-7 messages can contain control information or report errors, or can support the running of a network-aware application in some other fashion.

In Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server terminology, a message is a unit of information or data that is sent between two computers. An MSMQ message can contain either text or binary data. MSMQ applications communicate with each other using MSMQ messages.
