What is Messenger Service?

A Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000 service that sends and receives pop-up messages. These messages can be generated by the Alerter service, which generates Windows NT alerts when conditions warrant it. Or, an administrator can generate pop-up messages in one of the following ways:

  • In Server Manager, choosing Send Message from the Computer menu to send a message to all users currently connected to the selected server
  • Using the Net Send command at the Windows NT command prompt
NOTE

For a message to be received on Windows NT Workstation or Windows 2000 Professional, the Messenger service must be started on the workstation. For a message to be received on a computer running Windows 95 or Windows 98, winpopup.exe must be running.
