An index created by Microsoft Indexing Service. Persistent indexes are stored on disk and are more efficient and compressed than word lists, which are stored in volatile RAM.
All persistent indexes are ultimately merged into a single, highly efficient persistent index called the master index. The process by which this occurs is known as a master merge.
