What is Recipient (in Microsoft Exchange)?

In Microsoft Exchange Server, any directory object that can receive messages. Recipients are generally stored in the Recipient container within the Exchange directory hierarchy.

Types of recipients that you can create include the following:

  • Mailboxes:
    Usually are owned by a specific user and contain the user’s personal folders, messages, and attachments

     

  • Distribution lists:
    A grouping of recipients generally used to support mass mailings (such as customer support bulletins)

     

  • Custom recipients:
    Users on other mail systems such as the Internet’s Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) mail system or a private X.400 messaging system

     

  • Public folders:
    Locations for users to post documents and share workgroup projects

     

  • Mailbox agents:
    Scripts or programs that can process messages
